Keeping My Space Clean Is How I Respect Myself
After writing about choosing discipline over distraction, I realized I left something out… something simple, but powerful:
My space.
My home.
My environment.
The energy I wake up to, work in, and return to every single day.
Let’s be real… it’s hard to feel clear, focused, or grounded when you're surrounded by clutter. It’s hard to be your best self when your space drains you instead of supports you.
I used to underestimate how much keeping a clean, organized place affects everything …my mood, my creativity, even how I show up as a DJ.
But now I get it.
A Messy Space = A Messy Mind
When my space is messy, I feel off. Foggy. Stuck.
I’ll procrastinate on tasks that don’t even take long, just because I feel mentally blocked by the chaos around me.
It creates this low-key anxiety that simmers in the background. And before I know it, I’m scrolling. Avoiding. Numbing out.
But when my space is clean?
I think clearer. I move with more purpose. I actually feel inspired to sit down and create… whether that’s mixing, writing, or just planning my next moves.
The vibe is different. The energy is open.
Clarity Outside Helps Create Clarity Inside
As someone with a creative job and an unpredictable schedule, I’ve learned that external structure helps balance internal chaos.
Keeping my space organized isn’t about trying to be perfect …it’s about creating a calm, functional foundation I can rely on.
And it’s about self-respect.
I deserve to live in a space that feels good to come home to.That feels safe.
That doesn’t stress me out the moment I walk in the door.
Cleaning Isn’t Just a Chore …It’s a Ritual
There’s something powerful about lighting a candle after cleaning your kitchen.
Or making your bed first thing in the morning.
Or making sure all your gear is packed and ready before a gig … so you're not scrambling at the last minute.
These little actions say:
I care about myself.
I care about this space.
I care about creating new & great experiences for the crowd.
When I prep ahead of time, when my DJ booth is clean and my cords are organized… I’m not distracted. I can read the energy in the room. I’m ready.
It’s not about being obsessive.
It’s about showing up for yourself, consistently, in the small things.
Because the small things add up.
Organization Makes Everything Easier
Let’s be practical: being organized saves time, stress, and energy.
How many times have I been late to a gig, panicking because I couldn’t find my USB? Or a outfit I feel comfortable in?
Too many.
Now, I do my best to keep my gear packed, cords labeled, outfits ready, and essentials stocked.
When I walk out the door, I feel way more confident…because I’m prepared.
Discipline is in the details.
Cleaning Is a Love Language — To Yourself
It hit me the other day: when I clean, I’m not just maintaining a space.
I’m nurturing it.
I’m saying: This is worth the effort.
I’m worth the effort.
I deserve to make this space feel beautiful…even if no one else sees it but me.
That’s powerful.
It’s easy to fall into survival mode, especially in creative industries where everything moves fast. But if we don’t make room to breathe, we burn out.
So this is a reminder…to myself, and maybe to others:
Make your bed.
Do the dishes.
Light the candle.
Clean your studio.
Not because you “have to,” but because you get to.
Because your space reflects how you feel inside.
And you deserve to feel calm, capable, and cared for.
Final Thoughts
Choosing discipline isn’t always about grinding harder.
Sometimes, it looks like clearing off your table.
Folding your laundry.
Taking out the trash before it piles up.
These small, grounding actions help you move through the world with more peace, power, and presence.
If I’m feeling scattered, I try not to shame myself anymore.
I just start with my space.
I start small.
I start where I am.
Because even the smallest actions help rebuild trust with yourself.
And that’s where real discipline begins.
